Homecare Workers

The role of a Care Worker includes providing a high level of care and support to people living in their own homes. The role is varied as you help people complete the activities of everyday living, and no two days are the same.

You will be expected to perform a variety of tasks, clearly laid down in the care plan, located in the person’s home, this contains vital information detailing all the care and support required. To equip you with the necessary skills, you will be given thorough training, including 1 days shadowing a Senior Care Worker, before going out and working alone. Following is an example of the tasks you would be expected to perform on a day to day basis, either working alone or with a fellow home care worker;

Personal Care
- Helping some out of bed
- Washing/bathing a person’s body and hair
- Hand and nail care
- Toileting
- Dressing
- Meal preparation
- Prompting medication
- Helping the person into bed
- Catheter care
- Emptying a commode

Domestic Duties
- Washing and drying laundry
- Maintaining cleanliness of the home
- Shopping for household goods

Social Care
- Collection prescriptions and pensions
- Accompanying the person to a day centre or activity
- Sitting Service

In addition to the daily tasks listed, you may be asked to perform “rapid response” services, where you are required to offer a high level of support when an individual is discharged from hospital.
